Bucket Lists

The idea of a bucket list is a little silly to me. The things you want to do before you die… well, what’s stopping you? Why do you need to make a list instead of just getting up and doing them? Why wait until you’re near death to do the things you want to do with your life? Also, what’s with some of the stuff on these lists? ‘Get a tattoo’ is a prominent one… why do so many people want to get a tattoo “before they die”? Is getting a tattoo really that awe-inspiring and life changing? Will getting a tattoo really make someone feel that fulfilled with their life to the point that they can say, “OK, I got a tattoo. Now I can die happy.”?

I just don’t get it. “Hurray, I swam with the dolphins!” And… now lets move on to the next thing on the bucket list! Where’s the majesty if you’re only doing it to cross it off some list? Sure, learning how to surf would be fun if the opportunity presented itself. However,it’s not something I need to seek out just so I can die happy. And, unless surfing is something you’re actually into and going to stick with, what’s the point of learning in the first place?

Bucket lists, to me, are a very clear form of narcissism. They’re a way of going, “Look at me and everything I have done! Aren’t I special?” Some people have things like ‘Donate money to the homeless’ and ‘Help out a stranger in distress’ on their lists, but really… shouldn’t those be things you do anyways? Why are they special “Bucket List” things? Why are they one and done? Again, narcissism.

What would be on my bucket list? What are the things I want to do before I die?

1. I want to live a good and happy life
2. I want to be surrounded by loving, caring friends and family
3. I want to leave the world a better place than I found it
4. I want a simple, peaceful existence
and 5. I want a high tech cottage surrounded by woods but not too far from a decent sized city… hey, I can be a little selfish sometimes too! ;P

Check, check, check, check, and I’m working on it. So far in my life, I’d say I’m doing a pretty darn good job of crossing things off my bucket list 😀 hehe
