We all draw our own meanings from the music we listen to, but what’s really the story behind all those great songs we love? Was the Rolling Stones “Angie” ballad really inspired by Bowie’s ex-wife catching him in a sexual affair with Jaggar? Doubtful, but that one isn’t going to be “proven” anytime soon. Here’s a few that are proven yet many still get it wrong:

The Peter, Paul & Mary – “Puff, the Magic Dragon”
Nope, it’s not about marijuana. It’s about growing up and the loss of innocence.

The Eagles – “Hotel California”
Nope, it’s not about Satanism. It’s about the hedonism and greed of the music industry in the 1970s.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – “American Girl”
Nope, it’s not about a girl who committed suicide in Florida. It was inspired by an freeway in California.

The Beatles – “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”
Nope, it’s not about an acid trip. It’s about a picture his son drew of a schoolmate.

Phil Collins – “In the Air Tonight”
Nope, it’s not about a man refusing to help a drowning swimmer. It deals with his frustrations over getting divorced and the lyrics don’t reference anything specific.

The Vapors – “Turning Japanese”
Nope, it’s not about masturbation. It’s about losing your love and slowing going crazy, becoming something you never expected.

Bet you didn’t know that Bobby McFerrin, who wrote “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, is still alive and well today either (many think he took his own life). There is a truth behind every song, but one of the joys of music is that it can mean something different to everyone. So don’t speculate on what you think the band’s/artist’s meanings might be, just stick with our own and let them stick with theirs.
