Anyone who has ever played an MMO (massively multiplayer online game) knows about lag. For this picture, which was taken at the wildly popular Fantasy Faire in Second Life, lag was a serious issue (partly because people seemed to ignore the pleas of others to switch to low-lag appearances and to remove huds/heavily scripted items, but that’s another issue). I had to wake up early one morning in order to run my graphics on ultra and run through random windlights (color settings) without my computer crashing on the overly-populated sim… but it was worth it. Not only was I able to get the nice, simple image I wanted, but I was also able to capture a little piece of what the Fantasy Faire is all about.
Moving on to the Fantasy Faire itself, it was absolutely incredible. 18 days saw the building of ten entirely new worlds (here’s a larger image of where my photo was taken) with several thousands of avatars passing through daily. Goals were beaten, records were smashed… I just read that they are within half a million lindens (the games currency) of being the most successful fund raising event to ever take place within a virtual world. Last I checked, the amount raised for the Faire was 8,847,205 L$… that’s $35,389 US. And that’s just ONE event that Relay for Life of SL does yearly; we’re only now approaching the half way point of events too. I can’t wait to see the grand total for the year, 2012’s total was something like $375,000… that’s $375,000 US dollars donated to cancer research last year alone. Anyone who says we computer geeks don’t care can kiss my ass 😛 Lets keep breaking those records!
