Yesterday, Diana said she couldn’t understand why so many of our author friends were surprised when she told them she loved their writing. My answer was that it all harks back to the idea of slaving away in the garret, ripping out and crumpling pages from the typewriter because nothing is ever “good enough”. Creative types are so used to thinking their work isn’t good (comparatively or otherwise), and the constant rejections that come with our line of work don’t help much either, that most don’t know what to do when given a compliment.
Come on creative types, you’re doing it all wrong! Rejections should be your drive to work harder, and any compliments you receive should be your drive to work more. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, because every piece from every person is unique – no one will ever be able to create what you do. Your work is fantastic for where and who you are right now. Celebrate and continue to work towards your goals, rejections and compliments be damned! Just go for it!
