Recently, I lost my peace. The location I am in now, a noisy and distraction-filled pit that’s located directly next to the main walkway of a thoroughly packed house which contains many strange and sometimes aggravating characters, has made it very difficult for me to find it again. Perhaps my peace got left behind when we moved, perhaps it never got unpacked and is waiting to be found in the storage unit and dusted off. Either way, I have been very unhappy lately, to the point that I have been really grouchy and eye roll-y. I hate being this way, but it’s hard to do anything but when the responses you get for speaking up are: “Well, we’re old and set in our ways”, “Oh, sorry, just but on your headphones”, “That’s ok, you can just work tomorrow”. “But, I’ll always see you as my babies”, and so on. I’m told that I need to speak up when something is bothering me, but what’s the point when the only responses I get back are ones that say, “Sorry it’s bothering you, but I’m not going to change or do anything about it”? There is not even a willingness to compromise, so I have lost my peace.
What is my peace? My peace is living in a house where I can cook an actual meal without having to feed the entire house every time. My peace is living in a house where, if I buy something, I don’t have to hide it so I can be assured it will be there when I go back for it. My peace is living in a house where, if I watch tv, I can watch it alone if I so choose and don’t have to deal with constant interruptions and chatting by others. My peace is living in a house where I can hang out with my boyfriend and not have to be constantly told how adorable it is. My peace is living in a house where I am not treated like a twelve year old. My peace is living in a house where I can actually concentrate and get work down without a tv, a radio, or a phone call going on (without regard for my work schedule) just over my shoulder. My peace is living in a house where the only bathroom is not treated like an extension of the master bedroom. My peace is a house without birds. My peace is a house where I don’t have to wear headphones all the time just to drown out all the noise. My peace is a quiet house with just me, Chris, and the cats. Simple, no frills, and – most importantly – no in-laws. I love them, but I just cannot live with them… unless, of course, I give up my peace of mind.
