We all bear a small evil in our souls,
one that seeks out and protects us
when that which is good within
cannot face the reality of the day.

We call this piece of us evil,
yet it guards us defiantly
against the true ghastly horrors
that plague the corners and shadows.

We mistake our civil selves for honor,
believing we are somehow above
those who acknowledge their inner
and most powerful of demons.

We try to quell the human heart,
burning with fever to act upon
the truth of our internal anarchy
and set our true selves free.
