Do You Hate Me or Do I Make You SMILE? (Week 17 – 2015)

Relationships are complicated, and everyone navigates their own way through them, good or bad. This week’s SMILE theme is inspired by my loving (pain in the ass) boyfriend who suggested I do a SMILE about ‘boobs’… thanks hun ㅡ.ㅡ so helpful. But, in the end, I did get some inspiration from him and decided to focus on songs that showcase the complexity of love, specifically the ones that show how it (sometimes) goes hand-in-hand with hate. Enjoy!

Pink‘s True Love ft. Lily Allen (lyrics) is actually the song I thought of when Chris was being “oh so helpful” >ㅂ< I've always said I don't trust any relationship where the 'I hate you's' aren't followed by laughter, and Pink's song does an excellent job of showcasing that.

Alicia Keys‘ Fallin’ (lyrics) takes a look at the darker side of things. While people should be able to joke with each other over annoyances, it’s not always all fluffy clouds and rainbows (as my sister likes to say). This song showcases how complicated love truly is, and Alicia’s amazing voice and skills just make it that much more powerful.

Ashanti‘s Foolish (lyrics) takes it one step farther and deals with the truly difficult situation of loving someone you clearly shouldn’t. The last few lines of the song so simply and so eloquently express the notion that ‘love is never easy’.

Eminem‘s Love the Way You Lie ft. Rihanna (lyrics) brings everything to an explosive end, literally. I didn’t set out to make this such a ‘dark’ SMILE, but these types of relationships aren’t always bright and shiny. Sometimes, people can just laugh it off and move on, other times “a tornado meets a volcano” as the song says and things don’t end well.

Love truly is unexplainable and love-hate relationships can come in all shapes and sizes. What are some similar songs you can think of? Leave them in a comment below, and be sure to include any suggestions you may have for a future SMILE!
